International Stop Spam Day

International Stop Spam Day. January Holidays

When is International Stop Spam Day? This holiday is always observed on January 2

Today is International Stop Spam Day, a January 2 holiday that is relevant to the entire world. No, we’re not talking about spam, the processed pork in a can. We’re talking about the millions upon millions of junk texts, emails, and voicemails that bombard our cell phones and email accounts each and every day. It is an international problem, occurring anywhere and everywhere on the planet. Often the spammers come from offshore sites, making them unidentifiable and untouchable.

International Stop Spam Day was created to officially recognize spam texts and emails as one of the greatest scourges of our time, and to do something about it. Spam messages are a total waste of the recipient’s time and there’s seemingly no way to eliminate these time-consuming junk and scam messages from our lives. Spam filters are getting better at identifying spam. The trouble is, many spam messages still get through to your email account. And, junk mail folders sometimes trap real and important messages. That means you still need to spend time scanning the messages in your junk folder, lest you miss an important message.

What is Spam?

Spam is any unwanted text or email. These texts and emails are usually sent out in mass. There are a couple of kinds of spammers. By far the worst kind is created by scammers, who are looking to separate you from your money. In their quest for your money, their messages can appear very compelling. They have become very good at masking the source of the messages they send, making it sometimes look like it’s coming from someone you know. Valid businesses, organizations, and even individuals are another group of spammers, sending out messages that the recipient may or may not want. Often, it is from a valid sender you recognize, and whom you bought from before or have been acquainted with. But, the bottom line, is if you don’t want the message, it is spam, regardless of who sends it or what is their intent.

Ways to Participate in International Stop Spam Day

People often seem helpless to eliminate or even slow down the constant torrent of spam. There is a lot of truth to this concern. However, there are some things you can do to reduce the number of spam messages you receive. They include:

  • If you don’t recognize the sender, do not open the message. Delete them immediately.

  • Whatever you do, do not reply to messages from unknown senders.

  • If your email account provider allows you to adjust and personalize spam filter controls, by all means, tinker with these controls, to increase the accuracy of the spam filters.

  • Limit the visibility of your email address.

  • If you no longer want emails or texts from a retailer or other organization, unsubscribe from their mailings.

  • Don’t fall for signing up for mail and announcements. When filling out forms or ordering products and services, review each check box, to see if they are trying to sign you up to their mailing list.

  • Review website privacy policies. Avoid those that do not assure that they will not sell or share your email address or other personal information.

History and Origin of International Stop Spam Day

This holiday was created in 2020 by Bob Matthews of Holiday Insights. It was created at the start of the new year, to recognize that spam is here to stay, yet we should do everything we can to discourage its existence. Spam is an international dilemma. Start each new year right, by reviewing and strengthening your efforts to reduce unwanted spam. In 2025 Matthews said the problem is not getting better. But, he remains hopeful that spam filters will continue to improve.

This holiday is titled an international day because the proliferation of spam is a global problem.

National Inane Answering Message Day

Cell Phone. When is National Inane Answering Message Day? January holiday

About National Inane Answering Message Day

When is National Inane Answering Message Day? This holiday is always celebrated on January 30

Today is National Inane Answering Message Day, a January 30 holiday. Many people look at the title of this day and think ….huh!!? Some people think it’s a typo, and the day should read “National Insane Answering Message Day”. That’s because sometimes people leave the weirdest and craziest messages.

Let’s clarify the meaning of an “inane” answering message. We all get them. An inane message is a senseless or meaningless message, spam, or a prank call. Or, it could be literally an insane message. So, National Inane Answering Message Day is a day to end those numerous annoying messages. The trouble is…….how do you do that?

Before the arrival of cell phones, most homes had a telephone answering machine. They have disappeared from homes and apartments, too. However, they remain in practically all businesses. Here is a typical message we all had on all answering machines:  “Hello, this is John Doe. I am unable to come to the phone right now. At the sound of the tone, please leave your name and number. I will return your call as soon as I can”.

This is an old holiday that dates back to before cell phones when people had an answering machine attached to their landline telephones. In today’s world, we’re talking about inane voicemail. While technology changes, the messages we receive on our cell phones are as crazy and insane as ever. These machines capture important calls when we are not available. And, they also capture an immense volume of calls that are political, marketing, and scams of all kinds. There’s no shortage of them, and they’re proliferated by mechanized robocalls.

How to Celebrate National Inane Answering Message Day

Here are a few ways you can participate in this inane holiday:

  •  Leave an inane message on the voicemail of someone you know. However, NEVER leave one on a stranger’s voicemail.
  • Did you dial the wrong number? Don’t be the cause of an inane message. So, make sure you dialed correctly before leaving a message.
  • Use your voice. Contact your local, state, and government representatives urging them to enact stricter legislation on this issue.

Houseplant Appreciation Day

Houseplant Appreciation Day. January 10 holiday

About Houseplant Appreciation Day

When is Houseplant Appreciation Day? This holiday is always observed on January 10

Today is Houseplant Appreciation Day. This January 10 holiday reminds us to take care of our beloved plants. The holidays are over. The decorations have been put away for another year. Now our homes look a little plain, a little drab. In the drab, gray days of January, your eye catches something in the corner of the room. Why, it’s a houseplant! Funny, but with all of the holiday hullabaloo, you’ve all but forgotten your houseplants.

Today is THE day to get back to tending to and loving your houseplants. And, it’s also a day to appreciate just how special and important they are. They are therapeutic, lifting your mood and outlook. They add warmth and a calming effect. If you are a gardener, houseplants allow you to play in the dirt until spring arrives in the far, distant future.

Generally, growing houseplants is pretty easy. They need a little sunlight, adequate soil moisture levels, occasional nutrients, and a little love. The ideal houseplant thrives in a wide range of growing conditions. But, not every plant thrives has the same environmental needs. For example, Cacti and succulents prefer dry soil, while many other plants grow best in moist soil. So, your challenge as an indoor gardener is to provide each plant with the ideal environment that allows them to grow their best.

Houseplant Trivia and Fun Facts

Caring for houseplants is a wonderful experience. Here are some interesting houseplant trivia and fun facts to browse as you enjoy Houseplant Appreciation Day:

  • The average home has five to ten plants in their home.
  • You can literally grow any plant indoors. Your challenge is to provide the specific growing conditions for the specific plant.
  • Aloe vera, peace lilies, and spider plants are the most popular houseplants.
  • Plants are good for your health. They help to clean the air in your home by absorbing the carbon dioxide that you breathe. In return, they produce clean oxygen. Whether grown indoors or out, tending to plants relieves stress.
  • They take harmful toxins out of the air, too.
  • The best plants to grow indoors are those that require lower light levels and drier humidity. This is the common conditions in homes during the winter.
  • Not all plants are child and pet-safe. Rather, some plants are toxic. Therefore, red bout the plant before you buy it.
  • Houseplants improve your mood and cheer you up, especially the few that flower during the cold winter months.
  • Indoors, plants require less fertilizer as they grow more slowly.
  • Contrary to popular belief, most indoor plants do not need spritzing.

Thought for Today

I often wonder who Pete is and why we do things for his sake.

History and Origin of Houseplant Appreciation Day

This holiday was created by the folks at The Gardener’s Network

It was created for three reasons:

  • Promote the enjoyment of gardening as a hobby.
  • To remind people after the holidays, that their forgotten houseplants need a little attention.
  • To celebrate beneficial houseplants and to encourage growing houseplants.

This holiday is held on January 10, because it is shortly after the holidays, and plants need our attention after several weeks of neglect.

Since this holiday was created, a few internet websites have added the word “National” to the title. According to Bob Matthews, the creator of this holiday and owner of The Gardener’s Network, Houseplant Appreciation Day is not a “National” holiday.

A sense of love and romance is one of those feelings and emotions that a piece of artwork can awaken and inspire. Looking to create a little romance with that special someone? Try setting the mood, with an appropriate piece of art.

National Handwriting Day

When is Letter Writing Day? December 7 holiday

When is National Handwriting Day? This holiday is always observed on January 23

National Handwriting Day is today, a January 23 holiday. It is an opportunity to reintroduce yourself to a pen or pencil and a piece of paper. In this day of computers, more and more information, notes, and letters are sent back and forth via a keyboard and sent via cyberspace.

According to the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA) website “The purpose of National Handwriting Day is to alert the public to the importance of handwriting. According to WIMA, National Handwriting Day is a chance for all of us to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting.”

Some of the available documentation we read, suggests concern by stationary, paper companies, and pen and pencil manufacturers that the electronic world will shrink demand for their products. But, indeed, statistics show that pen (or pencil) and paper are alive and well, with growing demand.

Participate in National Handwriting Day by writing a note or letter to someone. Love letters are cool. Notes to people who are ill or incapacitated will be well received.

Sending handwritten notes and letters generally means sending them via snail mail. However, you can send the handwritten letter by fax, or pdf. You can also take a picture of it and send it as a JPG.

Ways to Participate in National Handwriting Day

Surely, you can write a few letters and notes on National Handwriting Day. Here are some ways to celebrate:

  • Exercise your penmanship. Reintroduce yourself to the ballpoint pen and pencil.
  • Do not communicate via text or email today.
  • Only send handwritten notes and letters. Yes, that means you have to send them via snail mail or hand deliver them, if possible.

Ballpoint Pen. When is Handwriting Day? January 23 holidays

History and Origin of National Handwriting Day

National Handwriting Day was established by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA) in 1977. Their motive is obvious…to promote the consumption of pens, pencils, and writing paper.

January 23rd was chosen because this is the birthday of John Hancock. John Hancock was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.

In response to our inquiry, WIMA informed us that they did not obtain a presidential proclamation or an act of congress when designating the day. An official “National” day requires an act of congress or a presidential proclamation.

This is a “feel good” day. It’s so easy and enjoyable to participate in this day. Elaine Helle, the originator has this celebration established down to the minute. Make plans to join the “Belly laugh bounce around the world!” At exactly 1:24 p.m. on your local time, put a big smile on your face, throw your hands into the air, and give a hearty laugh as loud as you can. Let it resonate all the way from your belly. The result is certain to make you and those around you feel better, Yes, your belly laugh should not be performed alone. Rather, do a belly laugh or two in front of others. Better still, get a group of friends together in a public place, and have a pleasurable belly laugh as a group. You will be chuckling about this day for years. Everyone will be glad you did!

The Four Goals for Global Belly Laugh Day

Researchers say that laughing adds years to your life. So, we hope you participate fully in this day.

Here are the four goals, as expressed by the author of this day:

  • To celebrate and remember past laughter.

  • To connect with others via laughing. Hence, doing it in public with others is the best way to celebrate.

  • To remember the importance of laughs and smiles.

  • To gain the health benefits of smiling and laughing. Laughter is the best medicine.

Record this historical event. We strongly recommend you get someone to do a video of your participation and post it on social media. The problem with this is finding someone who doesn’t want to participate in the laughing, as this event is too much fun to sit back and watch from the sidelines.

Fruitcake Toss Day

Fruitcake Toss Day. January 3 holidays

About Fruitcake Toss Day

When is Fruitcake Toss Day? This holiday is always observed on January 3

The holidays are over. The decorations are stored away until next Christmas. It’s time to get rid of the last symbol of the Christmas season… the fruitcake. Today is Fruitcake Toss Day, a January 3 holiday. It is your opportunity to finally throw away the old fruitcake. After the holidays are over, it’s time to bring in the new, and toss out the old. So, today is the day that the fruit cake goes….hooray! If you’re not sure how to get rid of it, play the Fruitcake Toss Game. (See instructions for playing below).

There is no one way to toss out the old fruitcake. Why not make a little fun out of it? Gather up a few friends who also are fortunate enough to have received a fruitcake for the holidays. Go out to a field and see who can toss it the farthest. Caution: do not toss the cake at anyone. This weighty steel-like mass of sugar, flour, and fruits could injure someone if they are hit by it.

Fruitcake Tossing runs counter to the tradition of many people to pass the fruitcake around from one person to the next. In this tradition, the person who is holding the fruitcake on New Year must store it away until the next Christmas season. See about Fruitcake

Interestingly, people are always saying bad things about fruitcakes. If fruitcake is really that bad, why does it appear on store shelves year after year!?

Play the Fruitcake Toss Game

So, it’s time to get rid of the seemingly indestructible fruitcake. You can enjoy this holiday to the fullest by playing the Fruitcake Toss Game. It’s simple and easy. Here’s how:

Number of Players 2 – 8

  • Cut the fruitcake into up to four pieces.
  • Pair players into groups of two.
  • Give each team a piece of fruitcake.
  • Now play the game exactly like the water balloon game, except you are using a piece of fruitcake instead of a water balloon.
  • Each toss is a step further away.
  • The winning team is the one who tosses the fruitcake to his or her partner the farthest without dropping it.

Note: Taking a bite out of the fruitcake as you lay is allowed.

How to Celebrate Fruitcake Toss Day

Regardless of how you do it, today is the day to get rid of that rock-hard fruitcake. Of course, you can always store it away for next Christmas…..

  • Simply throw it away.
  • Toss it in the composter or compost pile. Hopefully, it will turn into valuable compost for your plants in the spring.
  • Invite your friends. Slice it up and eat it.
  • Hold a Fruitcake Toss party. Invite everyone you know to bring their fruitcakes to the party. Create unique and ingenious ways to destroy them. Give prizes to anyone whose fruitcake proves indestructible.
  • Drop it from a step ladder.

Data Privacy Day

When is Data Privacy Day? January 28 holiday

When is Data Privacy Day? This holiday is always observed on January 28

In our digital and cyberspace world, data privacy is an increasingly important issue. Every day seems to bring another incident of a breach in data security, resulting in the theft of personal data affecting millions of us. Data security and privacy issues are not new. There was a growing concern since the 1970s and 1980s, well before we all logged into the Internet. Data Privacy Day, a January 28 holiday, encourages us to take steps to ensure our data security and personal privacy protection.

Hacking and breaking into corporate and government databases are regular events performed by young kids, cybercrooks, and foreign governments. Our privacy is also affected by companies that sell our personal contact information. That’s one way we get on those snail mail and email mailing lists, resulting in countless amounts of junk mail.

Today is a day for individuals and businesses large and small to make positive and effective efforts, to protect the privacy of their customers and their private personal data. It’s the perfect day for companies to hold forums and meetings to identify and eliminate weaknesses in their security systems.

It is also a day for you to get proactive in pushing both businesses and the government, to do more to protect private personal data and records.

Data Privacy Day is an international effort.  Many corporations are international. And, many hackers are lurking on the internet from outside the U.S.

Ways to Participate in Data Privacy Day

Cyber criminals are active and increasing in number on the internet. Thus, data security is a vital topic. Here are some things you can do today to better protect your private information:

  • Check and review your credit rating today and on a regular basis.
  • Strengthen your passwords.
  • Change your passwords regularly.
  • Consider acquiring data protection insurance.
  • Protect your email from spam and other unwanted emails. For example, if you don’t know the sender, don’t open the email.
  • Unsubscribe from unwanted email lists.

Today's Quote

“I look for the day…when the only criterion of excellence or position shall be the ability and character of the individual; and this time will come.” – – Susan B. Anthony

History and Origin of Data Privacy Day

The National Cyber Security Alliance sponsors this day. However, we are not sure if they created it. They make no open ownership claim. This holiday began in 2008.

The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the 1981 signing of Convention 108, the first international treaty dealing with data privacy and data protection.

This Day in History

In addition to Data Privacy Day, here are some important things that happened on this day:

  • The U.S. Coast Guard is created by an Act of Congress. (1915)
  • U.S. space shuttle Challenger explodes 72 seconds after liftoff, killing the seven crew members. Among the crew was schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe. (1986)
