When is Relaxation Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 15
Those lazy, crazy, hazy days of summer continue, at least for a little while longer. Soon, vacations will be over, the weather will cool down, and the kids will go back to school. For now, there’s still time to savor these last weeks of summer as Relaxation Day is here. On this August 15 holiday, the expectation is that we kick back and do nothing. Ahhhh! What a great day it’s going to be.
The stresses, the hustle, and bustle seemingly consume us, every day of the year. Even Sundays are no longer days of rest and relaxation. There never seems to be a day to just kick back and relax. For those of us with a hectic lifestyle, Relaxation Day is a day to look forward to. It provides a break from the madness of your busy work and personal schedule. Today is the day to enjoy either doing absolutely nothing or partaking in your favorite relaxation activity.
Avoiding stressful activities today is the rule. For example, if golf is your favorite hobby, yet it can cause you to stress, then make plans to play golf another day. Spending the day in a hammock is a far more appropriate activity.
Today’s Motto: Love simply, laugh often, and wine a lot.
Top Ten Ways to Enjoy Relaxation Day
Do nothing today.
Go to a Spa.
Go fishing.
Play a round of golf. (caution: Golf is not always relaxing)
Lounge around in a hammock.
Take a bubble bath.
Spend the day at the beach.
Go to the movies.
Do a little gardening. (no heavy-duty work, though)
Have a picnic in the park

About Professional Public Speakers Day
When is Professional Public Speakers Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 7
Today is Professional Public Speakers Day. This August 7 holiday recognizes the importance of those who stand up in front of us and share their knowledge and insight on an endless range of topics.
To be a speaker requires a very special and unique skill set. As soon as a speaker walks up to the dais, turns on the microphone, and opens his mouth, that unique set of skills becomes clearly apparent. Often a person has what it takes to talk in public, or is the expert in their field, but not both.
First, you have to have the ability, and shall we say the nerve, to speak in public. All too many people have everything else needed to be a good speaker. To many, the thought of talking in public in front of a group is nothing short of terrifying. For some people public speaking comes naturally, while others have an inbred fear that takes tremendous willpower and practice to overcome. Some people never get over the fear, and refuse to speak in public.
A speaker also needs to be knowledgeable about the topic to be discussed. Better still, they are often experts in their fields. For speakers who allow a Q&A after the talk, the depth of this knowledge and expertise is essential and is clearly on display.
Participating in this day is quite easy. Simply attend a seminar or an event with a speaker. Make sure to give a heartfelt applause after the speech. Another way to mark this day is to speak publicly yourself. Not quite ready to speak in public? Take a course in public speaking. You’ll be glad you did!
Who is a Public Speaker?
A public speaker is anyone who gets in front of a group or audience and opens their mouth to talk.
Here are some examples:
Any and every politician you have ever met.
Teachers go in front of a class every day.
Spokespersons for businesses and organizations.
Lawyers stand up to advocate and push for their clients.
Managers and administrators of organizations frequently address stockholders, employees, and the general public.
Priests and ministers talk and preach to their flock.
Lobbyists push their agenda.
How to Celebrate and Participate in Professional Public Speakers Day
Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in Professional Public Speakers Day:
Listen to an orator.
Become a public speaker.
Take a public speaking class.
Let speakers know when that you enjoyed their speech.
Attend a seminar or calls on a subject that interests you.
Today's Quote
“Do the thing you fear to do and keep on doing it… that is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer fear.” – – Dale Carnegie
History and Origin of Professional Public Speakers Day
We found very little information or reference to this day. We did not find the creator or when it was first created. This special event appears to be very recently created, around 2010 – 2015.
There was so little information and documentation about this day, that we almost chose not to post it. But, we feel that it is important to recognize those who speak in public, not just professionals, but all public speakers, if only for the bravery they display in talking in front of people and groups.

When is National Presidential Joke Day? This holiday is always observed on August 11
Most, if not all of our U.S. Presidents have had a sense of humor. It’s almost a job requirement in order to survive the stress and pressures of the office. and the campaign trail. Look back at any president and you’ll find plenty of jokes to amuse the constituents. Many people believe this August 11 holiday is a day to make jokes about the president. Actually, National Presidential Joke Day is for our presidents to make jokes. On this day in 1984, President Ronald Reagan made a doozie.
On August 11, 1984, just before his regular Saturday radio address, President Ronald Reagan was doing a voice test with the microphone. He thought the microphone and the feed were not live. He joked into the microphone: “My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.” To his surprise, he was speaking to a live feed!
This incident led to the creation of Presidential Joke Day. However, we do not think American presidents will make it a habit to perform jokes on, or to, the American public on this day, or any other.
How to Celebrate National Presidential Joke Day
Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate National Presidential Joke Day:
Tell jokes about the president or the office of the president. Night talk show hosts do this on a regular basis.
Watch the talk show hosts as they make jokes about whoever is currently in office.
Scour the internet for presidential jokes. They ae easy to find.
Today's Quote
“Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt.” – – President Herbert Hoover
History and Origin of National Presidential Joke Day
Presidential Joke Day began on August 11, 1984. It started when then-President Ronald Reagan made a joke, but didn’t know the microphone was live. There is very little information about its creation and the author is unknown.

When is the Perseid Meteor Shower? The date varies. The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is visible, weather permitting, from mid-July through late August. The peak is usually between August 9 - 14.
The Perseid meteor shower occurs annually in mid-August. It is a free stellar show that avid space enthusiasts can’t miss.
There it is in black and white, in all of its fiery glory. Whatever you do, do not blink! If you do, you will miss the meteor, as it flames across the night sky. It’s absolutely amazing what a little piece of dust can do when it enters the earth’s atmosphere traveling at 160,000 miles per hour. Meteors are seen as the Earth passes through the orbit trail of a comet. As the comet streaks through the heavens, it sheds dust and small debris. When this debris enters the earth’s orbit, friction from the upper atmosphere burns up the meteorite, resulting in a streak of light quickly blazing across the night sky. The brightness and longevity of the light is a function of the size of the meteor, how near it is to you (don’t worry, it’s thousands of miles away), and how dark the evening is?
The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the brightest, most numerous, and long-lasting of all the meteor showers. Best of all, it occurs each year in August, at a time when the viewing weather is warm, and most days and nights are cloudless. Many people are on vacation in August, allowing them to stay up all night to enjoy the show. The number of meteors you see is dependent upon how dark of a location you watch from, and the number of expected meteors. This number can vary significantly from just a few to a hundred per hour. On a good, moonless night, 60 – 100 meteors per hour are likely.
How to See the Perseid Meteor Shower
Here are some ideas on how you can see the Perseid Meteor Shower:
Go outside during the peak evenings and look up at the star in the sky.
If it is a cloudy evening, make plans to go out again tomorrow night.
When you see a meteor flash across the sky, make a wish. As the words from a Disney song go “When you wish upon a star your dreams come true”.
Go to your local planetarium or museum.
Did You Know? Meteorites are also called a “Shooting Star” or “Fallen Star”. Since ancient times, seeing a shooting star was a sign of good luck to come.

When is Neighbor Night? This holiday is always celebrated on August 17
Some people say the month of August is one big party. Everyone seems to be on vacation. The days are hot and dry. The warm evening weather is spectacular, a perfect evening for Neighbor Night. On this August 17 holiday, make plans to enjoy a pleasant evening with your neighbors. You just might enjoy it so much, that you schedule a Neighbor Night every few months. That’s exactly what happened in our neighborhood.
Having good neighbors is an important ingredient to a happy and fun-filled life. They are worth their weight in gold. We often don’t realize how important good neighbors can be. But like any relationship, you’ve got to nurture friendships with your neighbors. This neighborly get-together is the absolutely perfect way to party heartily with them. If you already have good neighbors, Neighbor Night will reinforce and grow the friendship. If you don’t know your neighbors, use this day to get to know them. Chances are, you’ll be glad you did. If you don’t get along with a neighbor, break the ice and be the first to hold Neighbor Night in your “hood. It will be fantastic, to turn an adversary into a friend. On this warm summer evening, you’re going to just love your neighbors… we do!
Tonight’s Slogan: What happens at Neighbor Night, stays at Neighbor Night.
Tonight’s Chuckle: Mr. Rogers did not adequately prepare me for the people in my neighborhood.
Make Friendships and Pleasant Memories
Ahhh, the memories you are about to make tonight! Hosting Neighbor Night on a warm summer evening is easy. “Casual” is the operative word. Start with a gathering in the backyard on your patio or deck. Your neighbors will ask what they should bring. Have each neighbor bring drinks and an appetizer share. As the sun goes down, a campfire is a great focal point (but not absolutely essential) for the party. Make dinner for the group and keep it simple. Use paper plates and plastic ware for easy cleanup. The evening will be filled with conversations and good humor. You can laugh and make as much noise as you want well into the night. Your neighbors won’t complain, because they will be there!
Tonight’s Toast: “Here’s to the nights we won’t remember with the friends we’ll never forget.” – – Author Unknown.

Participation in this day is easy. And, it’s fun. Here are some ideas on how to celebrate and participate in Neighbor Night:
Have a party with your neighbors in the backyard. Include drinks, appetizers, and dinner.

Today's Quote
“A bad neighbor is as great a calamity as a good one is a great advantage.” – – Hesiod
History and Origin of Neighbor Night
This very special holiday was created in 2021 by Bob Matthews from Rochester New York. Bob’s neighbors began getting together in a socially distant manner during COVID in 2020. It was so much fun, the neighbors started getting together every few months in the evening for drinks followed by dinner. Each couple took turns being the “Hosts”. Soon the group coined the evening “Neighbor Night”.
Matthews says “Good neighbors are tremendously valuable. But, it usually doesn’t just happen. Like any relationship, you need to nurture it, so it will grow. Neighbor Night is a great way to develop and improve relationships with your neighbors”.

When is National Dog Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 26
This day is going to the dogs. It’s National Dog Day, an August 26 holiday. There are two goals for today. First, to honor dogs, and to rescue them from homelessness and abuse. This is an opportunity for us to recognize and appreciate the value and importance of dogs in our lives.
This day is intended to appreciate dogs for all that they do for us. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help us out in countless ways. They are watchdogs for our safety. They lead the blind. Dogs aid in search and rescue, and they seek out bombs and drugs. A dog can even be a “wingman” for a single guy. Take a cute-looking dog on a walk and he attracts the ladies.
The second goal of National Dog Day is to rescue dogs in need. On occasion, dogs need us to save them from homelessness and abuse. The goal of the National Dog Day Foundation is to rescue 10,000 dogs a year. Lend a hand to help a dog in need today, or any day.
The motto for today is: “Saving 10,000 Dogs – One Day at a Time”.
How to Celebrate and Participate in National Dog Day
Here are some ideas on how to participate in National Dog Day:
Support animal shelters and other organizations that help neglected and abused animals.
Spend time with your buddy.
Take your dog for a walk.
Go to a dog park and play.
Give him special treats.
Teach him a new trick.
If you don’t have a dog, what are you waiting for? May we suggest you get a rescue dog from an animal shelter?

History and Origin of National Dog Day
National Dog Day was created in 2004 by animal welfare advocate and Pet Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige. The date was chosen, as this was the date the founder’s father got the first family dog.
President George W. Bush, a dog owner himself, sent a letter to the foundation in support of National Dog Day.

When is National Water Balloon Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Friday in August
It’s early August and the weather is still sizzling hot. The humidity is up there, too. We’ve got a great way for you and your friends to chill out. All you need is your bathing suit, a bunch of latex balloons, and water. With these few essentials, it is time to get wet as you celebrate National Water Balloon Day. Let the water balloon war begin!
The summertime fun continues. This is a day that people of almost all ages can participate. The littlest tykes and often elderly folk are among the few who may opt out of participating. However, moms and dads, aunts and uncles, as well as plenty of grandparents are often full participants in the fight. If you are having a water balloon war, once Grandpa tosses a water balloon at a participant, he becomes a fair target!
How to Celebrate and Participate in National Water Balloon Day
Like most holidays, it’s easy to figure out what to do on this special day. Put on your bathing suit. Makeup plenty of water balloons in advance, the more the merrier. Gather some friends and have fun on this special day.
We challenge you to a water balloon war! Participating in a water balloon fight is loads of fun. The more participants the merrier. Divide the participants into two or more teams. Just make certain to give each person or team the same number of water balloons. Then, let them fly.
Play Water Balloon Toss. It’s a great summertime game. Participants pair up in twos. Then, each duo is given a water balloon. All participants are lined up in two lines at the same distance facing their partner. Each recipient takes one step back and launches the water balloon to his or her partner. The object is to catch it without breaking it. When the balloon breaks, your team is out. The process is repeated until only one team remains. Make sure to have a prize for the winning duo.
Use them creatively as a practical joke. Caution: Make sure the recipient has a good sense of humor.
Balloon Trivia
Michael Faraday invented modern latex balloon ins 1824. He filled them with hydrogen for use in some of his experiments.
Some people call water balloons “water bombs”.
The first water balloons were actually waterproof socks. Edgar Ellington invented them in 1950. He was looking for a waterproof sock to help avoid trench feet.
Before latex balloons were invented, people made balloons by inflating pig bladders and animal intestines.
Water balloons are banned in South Africa, India, and a few other countries… how sad.
A sheep, a duck, and a rooster were the first living beings to fly in a hot air balloon.
