When is National Tequila Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 24

National Tequila Day is today, a July 24 holiday. This drink is strong and potent. You can’t drink too many before you really feel its effects. Tequila is made from the distilled sap of the succulent Blue Agave plant. It is important to know, that not just any agave plant will do. It must be specifically from the Blue Agave plant. As you enjoy a margarita, or a shot or two of tequila today, You have the blue agave plant to be thankful for.

Agave plants can be grown in any hot, arid area. By Mexican law, Tequila can only be made from the Blue Agave plant grown specifically in and around Tequila, Mexico, and a few select areas nearby. To meet the demand for Tequila, over 300 million plants are harvested a year!

The word “Tequila” has its roots in the Arabic word “Thaquila”, which means heavy and strong.

  • As early as 150 BC, Ancient Aztecs consumed Pulque, the ancestor of tequila.
  • It was introduced to America at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. During Prohibition, smugglers brought it into the U.S. from Mexico.
  • It is a plant-based drink.
  • The agave plant was once used to make clothes and roofing.
  • The word “Tequila” comes from the ancient Nahuatl word “Tequillan,” which means “place of tribute”.
  • Tequila producers must have patience. The plant matures in 8 – 12 years.
  • The most expensive bottle ever was made by Tequila Ley. It sold for $225,000.
  • Medicinally, Tequila soothes sore throats.
