About Kindergarten Day

When is Kindergarten Day? This holiday is always celebrated on April 21

It’s Kindergarten Day, an April 21 holiday. The first day at Kindergarten is a memorable, exciting, nervous, and anxious time for mother and child. Most children and mothers will never forget the first day of school. Hopefully, it was a good experience for all!

Kindergartens were originally a 1/2 day to get children acclimated to learning, social interaction, and school, in a fun, yet educational manner. And adults may recall having nap time in school. Nowadays, there’s no time for a nap. It has evolved into a full-time program. This is partly the result of increasing pressures on education, and partly due to the increase in working mothers in America.

This is an exciting time for little tykes. Like their older siblings, they get to put on a backpack and ride the school bus for the first time. That first day is a memorable, picture-taking event. Moms and dads have mixed emotions, as their little one is growing up all too quickly. But, the new kindergartener is all smiles as he or she looks forward to the new adventure.

Did You Know? Each year, over 3.5 million children enter Kindergarten for the first time.

The Origin of Kindergartens

Friedrich Frobel from the village of Bad Blankenburg in Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Germany started the first kindergarten in 1837. He called it the “Play & Activity Institute”.  His objective was to provide an opportunity for children to socialize before entering school. In 1840, he renamed the institute “Kindergarten”, a German word that means garden of children.

Frobel trained many women who went on to create Kindergartens all over the world.

History and Origin of Kindergarten Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. We found references to this holiday prior to 2000.

The date was selected in honor of the birthday of Friedrich Frobel, the creator of kindergartens.

Prior to 2015, this was known as Kindergarten Day.  Then, some internet websites began calling this National Kindergarten Day, for no apparent reason. We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.
