When is National Chopsticks Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 6.
Put away the forks and spoons, for today is National Chopsticks Day, a February 6 holiday. They may or may not be new to you. But, for about 1/4 of the world’s population, chopsticks are the eating utensils of choice for every meal. Like western children, Asian children, quickly learn to use chopsticks, and quickly become adept at using them. To them, forks are an odd utensil.
Chopsticks can be made of wood, bamboo, plastic, bone, fine china, or metal.
In China, they are called “Kuaizi”, which means “quick little bamboo fellows”.
Chopsticks have been in use for over 5,000 years. For comparison, forks were not used in England until 1611. Chopsticks originated in China and are used in virtually all Asian cultures. How their use spread to other countries is not known.
To participate in National Chopsticks Day, use chopsticks for all of your meals. Chances are, you will eat Chinese or other Asian food with your chopsticks. But, you can eat any food with chopsticks today.

- Over 45 billion pairs are used annually in China alone. Of course, many are disposable, one-time use.
- Most chopsticks are wooden, making them eco-friendly. And, you can recycle them in a composter along with yard waste.
- A pair of wooden chopsticks come together. When unseparated it is a sign of togetherness.
- The word “Chopsticks” in the Chinese language means “quick little bamboo fellows”.
- They vary in design. For example, Japanese chopsticks are shorter than their Chinese counterparts. And, they have a sharper point.
- If you use them for all of your meals, you have a slightly higher risk of osteoarthritis than when using a fork, knife, and spoon.
Chopsticks Etiquette
Improper use is in poor taste. And it can even be impolite or insulting.
- Don’t insert them upright into your food. It’s an insult.
- It’s okay to stab a piece of food with them.
- Don’t point at people with them.
- Don’t suck or chew on the ends of your chopsticks.
- They are not drumsticks. Don’t drum with them.
How to Celebrate National Chopsticks Day
- Use chopsticks when you eat today.
- Enjoy them with a Chinese meal.
- Lean how to use them. Teach someone ow to use them.
- Have some fun with chopsticks today. Make a game out of picking up peanuts or jellybeans with them.

In researching this day, the first thing we wondered about, was the word “National” in the title. One wonders what nation it is referring to. China and other Asian countries come to mind. Without knowing some of the Asian languages, it is difficult to research this day. Here in the U.S., we did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.
We found little historical information on the origin of this day. Its creator is anonymous.
