Kite Flying Day

Kite Flying Day

When is Kite Flying Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 8

Today is Kite Flying Day. On this February 8 holiday, we hope the weather is good enough in your area to go fly one. Flying them is a lot of fun for people of all ages. People have enjoyed flying them for thousands of years. It’s an ever-popular activity for children and enjoyed by many adults.

Ben Franklin was perhaps the most well-known kite aficionado. He flew a kite in a thunderstorm and discovered electricity. You can say he got a charge out of flying them!

We are amazed that Kite Flying Day is held in the middle of winter. Chances are few people in the northern areas of the country will brave the snow and cold today to go outdoors and fly a kite. There is strong evidence suggesting this holiday began in South America where it is summer kite flying weather.

Did you know? Kites were first used by the military in ancient China over 3,000 years ago. It is unknown when people began flying them for fun.

If the weather is good in your area, we have one thing to say to you… Go fly a Kite!

Song of the Day: “Let’s Go Fly a Kite”, from the movie Mary Poppins.

How to Celebrate Kite Flying Day

  • If the weather is okay in your area, go fly a kite.
  • Make a handmade kite.
  • Give a kite to a young child. Then, go fly it with him.
  • Watch the movie, Mary Poppins.

History and Origin of Kite Flying Day

We researched this day twice, once in the early 2000s, and again in the early 2020s. Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. It may have originated in South America, where kite-flying festivals are held at this time. Also, India holds an annual kite festival on January 14th.

We also found reference to many local or municipal “Kite Flying” days, held on various dates for several reasons. They were all local, and often a one-time event.

In our original research this was not referred to as a “National” day. In our second study, we found that beginning around 2015 some internet websites began referring to this as National Kite Flying Day, We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a true “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is important to distinguish true National days.
