When is National Water Balloon Day? This holiday is celebrated on the first Friday in August
It’s early August and the weather is still sizzling hot. The humidity is up there, too. We’ve got a great way for you and your friends to chill out. All you need is your bathing suit, a bunch of latex balloons, and water. With these few essentials, it is time to get wet as you celebrate National Water Balloon Day. Let the water balloon war begin!
The summertime fun continues. This is a day that people of almost all ages can participate. The littlest tykes and often elderly folk are among the few who may opt out of participating. However, moms and dads, aunts and uncles, as well as plenty of grandparents are often full participants in the fight. If you are having a water balloon war, once Grandpa tosses a water balloon at a participant, he becomes a fair target!
How to Celebrate and Participate in National Water Balloon Day
Like most holidays, it’s easy to figure out what to do on this special day. Put on your bathing suit. Makeup plenty of water balloons in advance, the more the merrier. Gather some friends and have fun on this special day.
- We challenge you to a water balloon war! Participating in a water balloon fight is loads of fun. The more participants the merrier. Divide the participants into two or more teams. Just make certain to give each person or team the same number of water balloons. Then, let them fly.
- Play Water Balloon Toss. It’s a great summertime game. Participants pair up in twos. Then, each duo is given a water balloon. All participants are lined up in two lines at the same distance facing their partner. Each recipient takes one step back and launches the water balloon to his or her partner. The object is to catch it without breaking it. When the balloon breaks, your team is out. The process is repeated until only one team remains. Make sure to have a prize for the winning duo.
- Use them creatively as a practical joke. Caution: Make sure the recipient has a good sense of humor.

- Michael Faraday invented modern latex balloon ins 1824. He filled them with hydrogen for use in some of his experiments.
- Some people call water balloons “water bombs”.
- The first water balloons were actually waterproof socks. Edgar Ellington invented them in 1950. He was looking for a waterproof sock to help avoid trench feet.
- Before latex balloons were invented, people made balloons by inflating pig bladders and animal intestines.
- Water balloons are banned in South Africa, India, and a few other countries… how sad.
- A sheep, a duck, and a rooster were the first living beings to fly in a hot air balloon.

History and Origin of National Water Balloon Day
National Water Balloon Day was created in 2019. The town of Newmarket, New Hampshire created this day as a national holiday.
While a town government declared this to be a “National” day, we did not find any documentation confirming this to be a true “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation. However, we won’t nitpick on the details. Instead, we will cool off today with a water balloon war.
