This holiday and party snack is one that kids and adults will chow down on. It is guaranteed to be a hit. To appear realistic, it must be served in a real dog dish. But please, use a brand new, never used (by a dog) dog dish. Make this puppy chow recipe for parties and holidays. It looks great on the Halloween snack tray.

Puppy Chow Ingredients

12 ounces of any flavor of Chex cereal or Crispix

1/2 cup butter, margarine, or oleo.

1 cup crunchy peanut butter

12-ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 – 3 cups powdered sugar

How to Make Puppy Chow Directions

  1. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips.

  2. Microwave on high for one minute. Stir mixture.

  3. Heat for an additional minute and stir again.

  4. Reheat and stir a little more until the mixture is smooth.

  5. Pour the cereal into a large bowl.

  6. Pour the mixture over the cereal.

  7. Stir gently until the cereal is well-coated.

  8. Pour the powdered sugar into a large bag. (paper works better than plastic)

  9. Pour the coated cereal into the powdered sugar.

  10. Shake well until cereal is well coated with powdered sugar.

  11. Lay out wax paper on a counter or table.

  12. Spread the puppy chow onto the waxed paper and allow it to cool and dry.

  13. Store in a covered container or food storage bag until ready to use.

  14. Serve in a brand-new dog dish.

Plum Cake Ingredients

2 cups flour

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

2 small jars of plum baby food

3 eggs, beaten

1 cup vegetable oil

confectioner’s sugar

How to Make Plum Cake Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

  2. Sift dry ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

  3. Add in plums, cooking oil, and eggs. Blend well.

  4. Pour into a greased Bundt pan.

  5. Bake for one hour, or until the cake springs back to the touch.

  6. Sprinkle confectioner’s sugar on top.

 This is a very old Pineapple Upside Down cake recipe. It is very sweet and very good! It doesn’t take long to put together, either. Using this same recipe, you can easily make mini-pineapple upside down cakes.

To make mini-pineapple upside down cakes, simply use a mini-Bundt cake sheet. If you’ve never seen one before, it’s like a cookie sheet with the impression of a dozen mini-bundt pans. Assemble the same way as instructed below but into the mini-bundt pans on the sheet.  It produces attractive individual servings. See the picture above.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake Ingredients

1 package yellow cake mix

1 box dark brown sugar

1 stick butter or margarine

1 can pineapple rings

8-ounce jar of maraschino cherries

Pineapple

How to Make Pineapple Upside Down Cake Directions

  1. Grease a large glass baking dish.

  2. Press brown sugar onto the bottom of the baking dish.

  3. Drain pineapple rings and cherries.

  4. Layer the pineapple on top of the brown sugar.

  5. Add the cherries on top of the pineapple, in the center of the rings, and around the outsides.

  6. Prepare the cake mix, as directed on the cake mix box.

  7. Pour the batter into the baking dish.

  8. Bake according to the cake mix directions.

  9. Test for doneness with a toothpick.

  10. Let cool slightly and turn upside down onto a large platter. The brown sugar will then be on top.

  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.

A little trivia: This cake used to be made and baked inside of a large cast iron skillet.

Many people do not even know what a pfeffernusse cookie is. It is a small, spicy German cookie with a peppery taste. The cookie has a soft and chewy texture. In German, Pfeffernusse means “Pepper Nut”. There is a little black pepper in it. But, there are no nuts. Rather, the cookies look a little like a nut.

Pfeffernusse Cookie Ingredients

2 1/4 cups flour

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon ground mace

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 eggs

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup finely chopped candied citron

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind

1/2 cup confectioner’s sugar

How to Pfeffernusse Cookie Directions

    1. Mix together in a bowl the dry ingredients, except sugar. Set aside.

    2. In a second bowl, beat eggs lightly.

    3. Beat in sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

    4. Stir in dry ingredients.

    5. Mix in citron and lemon rind.

    6. Roll dough into 1-inch balls.

    7. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, one inch apart.

    8. Cover with waxed paper and refrigerate overnight.

    9. Bake in the oven preheated set to 350° F.

    10. Bake for 20 minutes.

    11. Transfer cookies to a wire rack and allow them to cool.

    12. Roll the balls in confectioner’s sugar.

Pepperoni Bread Ingredients

1 loaf frozen bread dough

1 stick pepperoni, peeled and sliced thinly

4 oz. mozzarella cheese, shredded

1 egg

1 teaspoon parsley

1 teaspoon oregano

1/2 teaspoon salt,1/4 teaspoon black pepper

4 oz. mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Sesame seeds

How to Make Pepperoni Bread Directions

  1. Thaw bread dough according to package directions.

  2. Place the dough in a bowl and cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap.
  3. Allow the dough to rise.
  4. Preheat oven to 375° F.

  5. Spray cooking oil on a cookie sheet.

  6. Spread dough out almost to the edges of the cookie sheet.

  7. Mix together the egg and all seasonings except the sesame seeds.

  8. Spread 1/2 of this mixture on the bread dough.

  9. Place a two-row layer of pepperoni down the center of the bread dough. 

  10. Add sliced mushrooms(optional).

  11. Add mozzarella cheese.

  12. Pull up the sides of the bread, and crimp or pinch them together.

  13. Turn the crimped side over so it is on the bottom. Do this carefully, as the crimping can open up.

  14. Spread the remaining egg mixture on top of the dough.

  15. Generously sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

  16. Bake at 375° F for 25 minutes.

Serving the bread hot is best. Pepperoni bread is also good cold.

Peppermint Candy Cane Kisses Pretzel Ingredients

1 pound Waffle Pretzels

1 bag of Hershey’s Peppermint Kisses

How to Make Candy Cane Kisses Pretzel Sandwich Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 250° F.

  2. Line an ungreased cookie sheet with waffle pretzels, leaving a little space between each.

  3. Unwrap the Peppermint Kisses.

  4. Center one Peppermint Kiss on each pretzel.

  5. Put them in the oven for 4-5 minutes, until the Kisses are soft.

  6. Remove from oven and immediately place another waffle pretzel on each Peppermint Kiss.

  7. Press down lightly on the sandwich.

  8. Serve warm or cold.

Peppermint Candy Shortbread Cookies Ingredients

Peppermint Candy Shortbread Cookie Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 cup peppermint candy, crushed

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/4 cup cornstarch

Peppermint Candy Shortbread Frosting Ingredients:

  • 1 cup confectioner’s sugar

  • 1 – 2 tablespoons milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 tablespoons peppermint candy, crushed

How to Make Peppermint Candy Shortbread Cookies Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 300° F.

  2. Mix together butter, sugar, and vanilla with an electric mixer.

  3. Blend in crushed peppermint candy.

  4. Gradually blend in flour and cornstarch.

  5. Roll into 1″ balls, and place on a greased cookie sheet.

  6. Using a glass dipped in powdered sugar, press down on each cookie to flatten it.

  7. Bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, until the bottom begins to brown.

  8. Remove cookies from oven and allow to cool a little for 5 minutes.

  9. Mix all frosting ingredients, except peppermint candy in a mixing bowl.

  10. Drizzle frosting over the center of each cookie.

  11. Sprinkle crushed peppermint candy on top of the frosting.

  12. Allow to completely cool.

Peppermint Brownies Ingredients

4 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate, broken into 1″  or smaller pieces.

1 cup unsalted butter or margarine

3 eggs

2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup all-purpose flour

5 ounces (about 10 squares) of dark chocolate candy with mint filling

1/4 cup of candy canes, crushed

How to Make Peppermint Brownies Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350° F.

  2. Spray a 9″ square baking dish with cooking oil spray, and dust with flour.

  3. Melt unsweetened chocolate and butter in a double boiler, stirring frequently until smooth.

  4. Cool to room temperature.

  5. While the chocolate is cooling, in a large bowl, beat eggs, sugar, vanilla, and peppermint extract until well combined.

  6. Beat in the chocolate mixture.

  7. Slowly, stir in flour.

  8. Pour batter into greased pan.

  9. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes.

  10. Test brownies with a toothpick for doneness.

  11. Arrange mint chocolate squares on top of brownies.

  12. Return to oven for just a minute or two, until mint squares are soft/melted.

  13. Use a spatula to spread mint squares across all brownies.

  14. Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top.

  15. Allow to cool before cutting and serving.

Peppermint Bark Candy Ingredients

There are just two ingredients to this easy-to-make recipe:

  • 2 bags (12 ounces each) of white chocolate chips

  • 1 cup peppermint candies, unwrapped

How to Make Peppermint Bark Candy Directions

  1. Line a 15″ x 10″ x 1″ baking pan with aluminum foil.

  2. Coat foil with non-stick cooking spray.

  3. Place chips in a large bowl.

  4. Microwave at 1/2 power for 1 1/2 minutes.

  5. Stir and repeat n microwave, until smooth.

  6. Place candies in a 1-quart size resealable plastic bag.

  7. Crush peppermint candies with a rolling pin or saucepan.

  8. Fold 1/2 of the peppermint candy into the melted chocolate.

  9. Pour mixture into the pan with foil.

  10. Sprinkle the top with the remaining crushed candies.

  11. Refrigerate until firm.

  12. Beak apart into bite-sized pieces.

Peanut Butter Kisses Ingredients

1 cup peanut butter

1 cup shortening

1 cup light brown sugar

1 cup granulated sugar

1/4 sup milk

2 tsp. vanilla extract

2 eggs

3 1/2 cups flour

2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. salt

1/3 cup granulated sugar (for rolling cookies)

1 11oz. package chocolate kisses

Peanuts

How to Make Peanut Kisses Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F.

  2. In a large bowl, combine peanut butter, shortening and sugars.

  3. Stir in milk, vanilla extract and eggs. Add flour, baking soda and salt.

  4. Mix thoroughly.

  5. Shape dough into 1 inch balls.

  6. Roll dough balls in granulated sugar.

  7. Place dough balls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

  8. Bake for 8 minutes.

  9. Remove from oven and press a chocolate kiss into the cookie.

  10. Bake in oven for three minutes.

  11. Remove from oven and place cookies on a wire rack to cool.
