World Lion Day

About World Lion Day

When is World Lion Day? This holiday is always observed on August 10

Today comes in with a roar, as we celebrate the “King of the Jungle”. Also known as “King of the Beasts”, we’re obviously talking about lions, as today is World Lion Day. The key goal of this very special August 10 holiday is a global effort to promote the protection of lions and their shrinking habitat.

As the “King of the Jungle”, one might think that lions are invincible. Hunting and encroachment of civilization into their habitat are negatively impacting their numbers. Surprisingly, lions are at risk of becoming extinct. Lions are important to the balance of nature. They help keep the population of herbivores under control.

World Lion Day was created for three reasons:

  1. To raise awareness of the plight of lions in the wild and captivity.

  2. To encourage the protection of lions and their shrinking habitat.

  3. To educate people about the danger that lions pose to people. Lion tamers aside, you don’t ever want to come face-to-face with a lion.

Lions are social creatures. They group together in a family called a “pride”. A single adult male is the head of the pride. Females, sometimes many generations of lionesses, remain in the pride they were born in. Occasionally, a lioness will leave the pride, to form a new pride with a young adult male. Young male cubs remain in the pride until they become adults.

Did You Know? While we talk about lions as the “King of the Jungle, and movies often have them cast in a jungle environment, lions do not live in jungles. Rather, they live in grasslands and plains near jungle areas.

A Lion we love to Hate: Mufasa from Lion King

A Lion’s Best Friend: Tarzan, of course.

LIon Trivia

  • They are the king of the jungle. But, they live in grasslands or savannahs.

  • They live in groups called “prides”.
  • They can run at speeds up to 50 miles per hour.
  • Cubs are also called a whelp or lionet.

  • When male lions become adults, they are kicked out of the pride.
  • Male lions patrol the territory from rivals.
  • Females do 90% of the hunting for food.
  • The average lifespan is 12-16 years in the wild and up to 25 years in captivity.

  • A lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away.
  • There is a very rare white lion.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Lion Day

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in World Lion Day:

  • Support organizations that strive to protect the lions in the wild.
  • Watch documentaries about them.
  • Go to the zoo to see them. Don’t forget to take pictures.

About World Elephant Day

When is World Elephant Day? This holiday is always observed on August 12

Today is huge, make that enormous international event. It’s World Elephant Day. According to the creator and sponsors of this enormous August 12 holiday, the goal of this day is to raise awareness of the plight of the shrinking populations of African and Asian elephants.

Elephants have a huge and impressive footprint. They are the largest living land animal in the world. Despite their size, elephants can be tamed to the extent that humans can work with them. They can be taught to do work, including heavy lifting, and we can even catch a ride atop their massive backs. They’ve also been employed in wars. They are beloved by children and adults alike and are the most popular animal in zoos around the world.

Elephants are facing a struggle for survival. Just 100 years ago, there were an estimated 5 to 12 million African elephants. Now, there are only approximately 400,000 African elephants left. There were about 1,000,000 Asian elephants 100 years ago. Now, only an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 exist. Asian elephants are on the “Vulnerable Species” list. African elephants are on the “Endangered Species” list. They need our help to survive.

Elephant populations are decreasing in numbers for several reasons. Poaching is perhaps the number one problem. Poachers hunt and kill them solely for their valuable ivory tusks, leaving the carcass behind. Poachers illegally hunt them in open ranges, as well as elephant sanctuaries. Loss of habitat is another huge reason for their declining numbers. As human populations continually increase, more and more wildlife areas are razed and converted to farms to feed the ever-growing need for food. That causes increasing conflict with humans, as the elephants roam into and damage farmlands. Mistreatment of elephants in captivity is also a stress on the steadily decreasing elephant population.

Elephant Trivia

  • African bush elephants are the largest land animal. They can weigh up to 13,000 pounds.

  • Elephants typically spend 16 hours a day eating.

  • Elephants really do have a good memory.

  • Elephants do indeed like peanuts.

  • Over 300 species of elephants have roamed the earth for over 55 million years.

  • Elephants are afraid of bees. Farmers use bee hives to keep elephants from coming onto their land.

  • The oldest elephant lived to be 86 years old.

  • Elephants are pregnant for 22 months… Yikes!

  • Elephants weigh up to 260 pounds at birth.

  • An elephant’s trunk is also called a proboscis.

  • Pachydermophobia, or Elephaphobia is the fear of elephants.

  • Speaking of an elephant’s trunk, it can weigh up to 400 pounds and pick up a grain of rice.

  • An elephant’s trunk has about 100,000 muscles.

  • Elephants can’t jump. They always have at least one foot on the ground at all times.

  • Elephants can swim. They use their trunk as a snorkel when swimming.

  • Ivory from the tusks of just one elephant, can be worth over $100,0000, or $2,100 per pound.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Elephant Day

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in World Elephant Day:

  • Support organizations that strive to protect the remaining elephants left in the wild.

About World Daffodil Day

When is World Daffodil Day? The date of this August holiday varies

Today is World Daffodil Day. Daffodil Days are held on a wide range of dates at the world, national, and local levels. There is definitely no consensus on a common date. And that’s okay, as the goals are the same. Whether you are commemorating World Daffodil Day today, or any other Daffodil Day in any country or locality, the goals are critical and vital. Daffodil Days are held to raise awareness of cancer and how to avoid it. Other goals of World Daffodil Day, are to raise funds for cancer research, raise public education and awareness, and help those affected by this deadly and devastating disease.

Why are Daffodils a symbol in the fight against cancer? Daffodils are a worldwide symbol of life.

In some way and at some time, cancer touches everyone in the entire world. Chances are you or someone you love will have cancer at some time in their lives. We all certainly know many people who have had cancer. All over the globe, there are cancer societies and groups organized to help in the fight against cancer and to find a cure. We strongly encourage you to become active in the fight against cancer. At the very least, contribute… give what you can.

Note: This page is in honor of this authors’ dear uncle, Bob Hicks Jr., who courageously fought, and ultimately lost a five-year battle with Multiple Myeloma, a bone cancer.

How to Celebrate and Participate in World Daffodil Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in World Daffodil Day:

  • Donate to cancer research organizations.

Work Like a Dog Day

About Work Like a Dog Day

When is Work Like a Dog Day? This holiday is always observed on August 5

Do you work harder and longer hours than anyone you know? Are you a workaholic?  If you answered yes to either or both of these questions, then you will appreciate Work Like a Dog Day. This August 5 holiday recognizes, honors, and appreciates the hardest working among us. After all, our jobs are tough, and somebody has to do the work while the rest of us take another coffee break.

Some people skate by, doing as little as possible. Others do only what they have to. Others still work like a dog. While work is to be done, they dig in relentlessly. They seldom take a break until the task is completed.

We want to make sure to differentiate between “Work-A-Holics” and those who “Work Like a Dog”. Work-A-Holics are always working, even though they may not be working hard. Those who work like a dog, work very hard while they are working. But, they do not work all of the time.

Today is a day to show appreciation for those who carry more than their load and work like a dog. You can also honor them by working like a dog today.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Work Like a Dog Day

Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate Work Like a Dog Day:

  • Toil on the job as hard as you can. Work like a dog.
  • Accept tough and difficult assignments.
  • Work lots of overtime.
  • Bring your work home, and even on vacation.
  • Fire up the laptop by the pool.
  • Take your satellite phone with you on hikes in the woods and campouts so you don’t miss a single business call.

Today's Quote

Women's Equality Day

Susan B. Anthony. February calendar with holidays. Women's Rights

About Women's Equality Day

When is Women's Equality Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 26

Women’s Equality Day commemorates the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. On this August 26 holiday, we commemorate the success of the Women’s rights movement to date and commit ourselves to further improvements.

In 1971, after much work, and at the urging of U.S. Representative Bella Abzug (D-NY), Congress designated August 26 each year as Women’s Equality Day. This day was selected to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution on August 26, 1920. This amendment granted women the right to vote.  This was the culmination of decades of effort by women suffragettes and other groups.  Their efforts dated back to the first women’s rights convention in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York.

Celebrate this day in several ways. First, stop and celebrate the accomplishments made in gaining the right to vote, and towards equality for women. Women’s rights groups suggest you continue to be involved in pursuing full and equal rights for women in all areas and all issues.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Women's Equality Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in Women’s Rights Day:

  • Continue to support efforts for women’s rights.
  • Learn about Susan B. Anthony and others who fought for women’s rights.
  • Visit the Women’s Rights Historical Park in Seneca, NY.
  • Read the 19th Amendment of the United States Constitution.
  • Visit Susan B. Anthony’s home in Rochester, NY.

About National Thrift Shop Day

When is National Thrift Shop Day? This holiday is always observed on August 17

Do you consider yourself a thrifty person? Are you looking for a great deal? National Thrift Shop Day is a day for a real bargain. On this August 17 holiday, fight inflation and the high cost of living by shopping at discount stores, flea markets, and other thrift shops.

A “Thrift Shop” is an old term for stores that sell items deeply discounted merchandise. Typically, thrift shops are often outlets of charitable organizations like the Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Vietnam Vets. These organizations accept donations of gently used clothing and household items. After checking them over, many donated items make their way to the organization’s thrift store. The proceeds from the sale of these goods are used for charitable purposes.

Also, there are for-profit thrift shops. Examples include flea markets, farmer’s markets, outlet shops, and discount department stores.  Some of these businesses sell new items at discounted prices. And others sell used goods. It’s not always the highest quality, but the price is right.

Watch for sales and specials today at Thrift shops in celebration of National Thrift Shop Day. If you are a store owner, hold a sale around this special day, and watch your August sales sizzle!

How to Celebrate and Participate in National Thrift Shop Day

Here are some ideas on how you can celebrate National Thrift Shop Day:

  • Donate used clothing and other items to organizations like the Salvation Army or the Vietnam Vets, so they can sell your gently used goods in their thrift store.
  • Shop at thrift stores.
  • Patronize your local flea market.
  • If you are an owner of a thrift ship, offer a store-wide sale.

Today's Quote

History and Origin of National Thrift Shop Day

Our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day. Without a doubt, a thrift shop somewhere started this special day. It most likely originated when a Thrift store promoted a summer sale.

There is no documentation confirming this to be a “National” day. We found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.

Wiggle Your Toes Day

When is Wiggle Your Toes Day? August 6 holidays

About Wiggle Your Toes Day

When is Wiggle Your Toes Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 6

For some odd reason, kids are fascinated with their toes. They do all sorts of things with them, among them is wiggling their toes. Because of this fascination, it’s only fitting that we celebrate Wiggle Your Toes Day. On this fun, and somewhat inane August 6 holiday, we invite little AND otherwise grownup kids to give your little piggy toes some exercise.

Those ten extremities at the ends of your feet are crying out for a little freedom. Cramped up inside a pair of shoes or sneakers all day long, your stinky toes just don’t get the chance to move about freely, as they would like to do.

Celebrate Wiggle Your Toes Day by airing out your toes, and wiggling them around for all to see. The best place to wiggle your toes on a hot August day is in the pool. Or, sit on a dock and stick your wiggly little toes in the water.

Did you Know? Not all toes are alike. Like people, toes come in all shapes and sizes. There is a small percentage of the population who have two or more toes partially joined together…. web-like toes!

How to Celebrate and Participate in Wiggle Your Toes Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in Wiggle Your Toes Day:

  • Wiggle your toes in the sand.
  • Jiggle and twitch them in the pool.
  • Wiggle and wave them as a greeting to people.
  • Stick your piggie toes under the covers and wiggle them.
  • Make a big splash in the tub with them.
  • invite some friends to join you in these activities.

National Trail Mix Day

Trail Mix Day, Chex Mix

When is National Trail Mix Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 31

National Trail Mix Day features a high-energy, tasty treat for the trail or snacks. On this August 31 holiday, you can buy packages of trail mix at a store. Or, you can make up your own, using the ingredients you like best. Making your own is much more fun. And, you can make it in minutes with your favorite mix of ingredients. Of course, once you have a package of trail mix, you need to do something fun. May we suggest a long late-summer hike or a little mountain climbing?

When you head out to a campout, hike, or go biking, take a bag of trail mix along with you. It provides the extra energy boost to keep you from getting tired and running out of energy along the trail. Don’t limit trail mix to the trail. It is also good at campouts, too.

Trail mix stores well. Just put any unused trail mix into a sealable plastic bag and put it into the freezer for your next hike.

Happy trails to you!

How to Make Trail Mix

Making trail mix at home is fun and easy. It takes minutes to prepare. Here’s how:

  • Gather your favorite snacks for the mix.
  • Pour them all into a big bowl.
  • You can vary the mix, putting more or less of an ingredient. You’ve got to mix in more of your favorite ingredient, right!?
  • Mix them all together.
  • Put the mix into sealable plastic bags.

Here is a fun way that the Boy Scouts make Trail Mix:

  • Ask each hiker or camper to bring a box or bag of their favorite cereal, nuts, pretzels, raisins, dried fruit, M&Ms, etc.
  • For younger hikers or new members of the group, it’s best to provide them with a list of the types of food that can go into the trail mix. That way, the inexperienced hiker won’t bring something that can not be easily carried.
  • At the campout or before the hike, bring the group together and mix all the snack items in a big, big bowl.
  • Put the mix into sealable baggies and pass them out to each scout.

Tips: When making your trail mix, avoid messy items that leave your hands sticky.  Also, avoid too many salty items. For example, unsalted nuts are better than salted ones.

How to Participate in National Trail Mix Day

Here are some ideas on how to participate in National Trail Mix Day:

  • Take a hike or climb a mountain and bring some along.
  • Put some trail mix into your backpack and take a long bike hike> How far will you go?
  • Make your own trail mix. Vary the ingredients to include your favorite items.
  • Have it as a snack on the beach.
  • Eat it as a nighttime snack.
  • Bring some to work to share with co-workers.

Toilet Paper Day

About National Toilet Paper Day

When is National Toilet Paper Day? This holiday is always celebrated on August 26

We believe there’s no other holiday quite like this one. Many people don’t like to talk about TP. We just want to appreciate its vital importance, while otherwise taking it for granted. As the Charmin ad says, “Enjoy the Go!” On National Toilet Paper Day, we certainly want you to have a happy experience. Then, perhaps you’ll feel more comfortable sharing the pleasant experience with others. We hope you thoroughly enjoy the go on this August 26 holiday.

Let’s not take toilet paper for granted. It may not always be there when you need it. For many of us, it is needed multiple times a day. Toilet paper is indeed an essential item. It is not available in many parts of the world. If you’ve ever entered a stall without first checking to see if the dispenser is empty, you will agree that it is truly essential. So, as you roll off a hefty wad of toilet paper while you sit on the throne, take a minute to reflect and appreciate that it is there.

We believe there’s no other holiday quite like it.

Toilet Paper Has a Long and Soiled History

Over thousands of years of history, there were many ways to clean up after the “go”. In the early days, people just used their hands for clean up. Over time, the left hand came to be designated for this task. It would then be washed in a nearby creek or simply wiped off. In many cultures, people would not use their left hand for eating or many other tasks. Over time, a wide variety of items came to be used for the clean-up job, including rocks, leaves, corn cobs, and more. Squatting over a creek was common, with waste being washed downstream by the current. Perhaps one of the most bizarre methods of wiping one’s derriere clean came into use around 79 A.D.  A wet sponge on a stick was used. After use, it was rinsed off and left for the next person!

Fortunately for me and you, progress and invention brought about much more sanitary and disposable toilet paper. Toilet paper was invented in China in 580. It came in sheets. It was coarse and expensive. Most of the population couldn’t afford it. It wasn’t until the 1400s that it began to be manufactured in China. Most of the world had to wait until the 1800s, for toilet paper to come into popular use. In 1857, toilet paper sheets were commercially sold for the first time in the U.S. On December 22, 1871, Seth Wheeler from Albany, NY received patent #465,588 for the toilet paper roll. With toilet paper now on a roll, using “the head” and “powdering your nose” became far more convenient and sanitary. We only had to wait another century or so for indoor plumbing, but that’s a subject for another day.

The Great Over/Under Debate

For many decades a debate raged over whether the roll of toilet paper should unfold over the top of the roll, or under it. To this day, many people still (mostly) humorously argue their case for over or under. It’s a proven fact that toilet paper unrolled over the roll is more sanitary. Those in favor of under the roll, argue those who do so are more intelligent. There are many other arguments for each direction.

Seth Wheeler’s 1871 patent for the toilet paper roll clearly shows diagrams of toilet paper coming off the top of the roll. But, wait! There are other pictures of Wheeler’s invention where the toilet paper unrolls under.

So, which way is the winner of this debate? We will let you…. make the call.

Did You Know? When a roll of toilet paper is used up, most people throw the cardboard core away into the trash. But, the cardboard roll is recyclable. Placing it in the paper recycling bin, or composting it saves space in the landfill.
