About National Stress Awareness Day

When is National Stress Awareness Day? This holiday is always observed on the first workday in April after U.S. taxes are due.

Is work or school causing a lot of pressure in your life? Are the kids on your nerves? Is there enough money to pay all of those bills? All of us have stress at some point or another. Yet, some of us worry and fret over just about everything. There are thousands of reasons for you to get stressed out. RELAX!!! Today is National Stress Awareness Day. Today is your opportunity to recognize that there is plenty of stress in your life… as if you didn’t already know. More importantly, today is an opportunity to learn, and to do something about the stress…… before it drives you batty, ruins your health, or worse.

If you are extremely stressed and anxious all of the time, we recommend you go seek help. However, for most of us, stress is an occasional issue driven by a problem or worry in our lives. The first step is to recognize you are stressed. That’s usually easy, Then, you need to identify what is causing your stress. That is usually easy too. And, it often is the result of several causes. Now comes the hard part. How do you relieve stress in your life?  We’ve got several suggestions, so read on…. 

April is also designated as Stress Awareness Month.

Did you know? There was a method behind the madness. The Health Resource Network, creators of this holiday, chose April 16 to celebrate Stress Awareness Day because it is the day after taxes are due! 

The UK also has a National Stress Awareness Day, organized by the International Stress Management Association. It is held in November. The date changes each year.At least your in good company.

How to Participate in National Stress Awareness Day

Do something about your stress level. Here are some ideas:

  • Do something that relaxes you.
  • Take the day off from work.
  • Go to a spa.
  • Exercise at the gym.
  • Take a hike in a calm, outdoor setting. A park is a perfect place. Go to a movie, play or the opera.
  • If a person is causing you stress, talk to them and work it out. Or, stop seeing that person.
  • Have a glass of wine.
  • Participate in your favorite hobby. Gardening is a relaxing hobby.

History and Origin of National Stress Awareness Day

Stress Awareness Day and Stress Awareness Month is sponsored by the Health Resource Network (HRN). They started this holiday in 1992, to increase public awareness of the causes and cures of stress.

Interestingly, the date for this holiday is the workday after U.S. taxes are due. Without a doubt a workday, and Taxes each can be a cause for great stress. 

We found no congressional or presidential proclamation making this a true national day.
