The origin of the waffle: The waffle dates back to the 1300s in Greece. People have enjoyed them ever since. Greeks cooked flat cakes between two metal pans. At the time, they topped it with cheeses and herbs. However, pancake syrup wasn’t around back then.
Waffles are commonly eaten as breakfast or a snack. Additionally, they are also an occasional lunch or dinner meal for some people.
The World Record: According to the Guinness World Book of Records, on June 29, 2103, Stichting Gouda Oogst (Netherlands) in Nieuwe Market, Gouda, Netherlands made the world record largest waffle. It weighed 110 lbs. 3.68 oz. The diameter of the waffle was 8 ft. 1.24 in.

We know people have been making and eating waffles at least since the 1200s when waffle irons were first used, perhaps much longer. But, our research did not find the creator or the origin of this day.
The date for this holiday was selected to celebrate the patenting of the waffle iron by Cornelius Swarthout of Troy, New York on August 24, 1869.
We found no documentation in congressional records to confirm that this is truly a national day. Nor, did we find a presidential proclamation.
