About National Stepfamily Day

When is National Stepfamily Day? This holiday is always observed on September 16

Stepfamily Day was established to recognize and show appreciation for the importance and value of stepparents and extended families. This September 16 holiday was first celebrated with a picnic on September 16, 1997. The suggested method of celebration is a picnic at a park. Since its inception, it has slowly gained recognition and popularity.

Stepfamilies are created through the death of a parent, divorce, or separation. A stepmother or stepfather comes into our life, often accompanied by a stepbrother or stepsister. While it begins with a tragic or unsettling event, these people are a blessing.

Decades ago, most marriages lasted for life. Separation and divorce were often looked down upon. In today’s society, divorce and remarriages are commonplace. Over 50% of all marriages end up in divorce. That means over half of us are divorced and/or children of divorce. That gives us cause to recognize the extended family, and how they can enrich our lives.

Take a minute today and reflect upon a past dejection. Then, smile with the realization that we are indeed loved.

How to Celebrate National Stepfamily Day

  • Have a picnic in a park with your stepfamily. Spend a few minutes to appreciate how great it is to have a stepmother and stepfather.
  • Spend some time with your blended family.
  • Share a special meal or evening with them.
