About Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

Date When Celebrated: This fun holiday is always observed on September 13

Parents, are you raising a young chef or two? Kids, did you ever think about a career as a chef or some other job in the food service industry? Today is your chance to take over the kitchen and cook a meal for the whole family. Today is Kid’s Take Over the Kitchen Day. Kids, you can prepare breakfast, lunch, or dinner. And, you can make anything you want. It sure sounds like fun to me!

Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day is a really fun day. It’s an opportunity for kids to take charge of a meal, from the planning stage, all the way through to washing the dishes. But parents, hold on a second. You just don’t know how this day is going to turn out. It might be a wonderful day off from kitchen chores for you. Or, there could be smoke coming from the kitchen. You may have to arbitrate a sibling squabble. You also could wind up rewashing the dishes. We’re going to be optimistic and assume the kids will take charge in the kitchen, and you will all enjoy a family meal fit for a king and his family. Just in case, be prepared to order a pizza.

Tip for Today: Remember, you are going to do the dishes, too. We recommend paper plates and disposable silverware.

How to Celebrate Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

Alright kids, are you ready to get started? If you’re old enough to do this on your own, kick mom and day out of your kitchen and ban them from entering until the dishes are washed, dried, and put away. It’s okay for younger kids to let mom and dad assist if need be. But, remember it’s the kids who are in charge.

Start by planning the meal a couple of days before. Send mom or dad to the store for what you need for the meal. When Kid’s Take Over the Kitchen Day arrives, put up a sign in the kitchen that reads “Kid’s Kitchen”. Include your name on the sign. Prepare and cook the meal. If there is more than one of you, make assignments for who will make what. While the meal is cooking, set the table. After dinner, gather up the dishes. Then, wash, dry, and put the dishes away. Now, congratulations on a job well done!
