National Sea Shell Day

Sea Shells, National Beach Sea Shell Day

Date When Celebrated : This holiday is always observed on June 21

Today is the first day of summer. It's time to hit the beach, soak up some rays, and search for seashells. It makes perfect sense that today is also National Sea Shell Day.

Seashells are found on beaches around the world. As they crumble and break down, sea shells help to form the very beach where you love to sun bathe and swim. Beach goers young and old, love to collect seashells of all shapes and sizes. We take them home and put them on display, as a reminder of those warm, sunny and fun days on the beach.

What's your favorite seashell? A conch, a clam, a sand dollar or a seahorse, perhaps? Chances are, you collect them all. As you pick them off the beach, make sure the shell is empty and not alive. When in doubt, gently, place them back in the ocean. With a little luck, the tide will take the little fella safely into sea, and not back onto the beach.

The best time to search for sea shells is from an hour before to an hour after low tide. Most can be found along the high tide mark. During peak summer season, thousands of people are on the beach, looking to beat you to the treasure trove of unbroken seashells. The most successful sea shell hunt occurs at first light, when seashells from the night before are most plentiful.

Did You Know? The Guinness World Book of Records has a category for the largest human image of a seashell. It included 1.093 people.

The History and Origin of National Sea Shell Day:

National Sea Shell Day was created and is promoted by "The Beaches of St. Myers and Sanibel". This special day was created in 2016 and is now celebrated annually.

There is no presidential proclamation, nor any documentation from the U.S. Congress, to support this as a true U.S. "National" day. The creators make no mention on their website, to any efforts to obtain official "National" status.
