When is Card Reading Day? This holiday is always celebrated on February 21
Whoever said, “it is far better to give than to receive?” As for me, I sure enjoy receiving greeting cards and reading them. That’s because you can’t read a card until you receive one. That makes today the perfect day, as it is Card Reading Day, a February 21 holiday. It’s a day to read and send greeting cards. In the cards, we express our emotions and feelings towards someone.
We send greeting cards for many reasons. Those reasons include:
- To express our love
- To cheer someone who is ill
- To celebrate a holiday
- To celebrate an event like the birth of a child
- To thank someone
- And, for countless other reasons
Beyond a doubt, the stationery and Ecard companies love this day. It encourages you to send cards. They like that.
As we did our research, we thought we’d find some history that suggests it is a day for Tarot card readings. It very well could be. But, we found no written evidence to support our theory.
What we can tell you, is that it’s very popular to send and receive cards today. In order to read a card, someone has to send one. So, get the ball rolling and send out some cards today. Chances are good that you will receive a few back in return.

Greeting Card History
Greeting cards originated in Ancient China. At the time, they traded New Year messages. Early Egyptians sent greetings written on papyrus scrolls. Early greeting cards were handmade. Greeting card companies didn’t come on the scene until thousands of years later. People begin celebrating Valentine’s Day in the 1400s and exchanged cards of love. In the 1840 postage stamps were introduced, and the growth of the cards soared. In 1843, John Callcott Horsley created the first Christmas card.
With the arrival of the Internet, Ecards made sending cards much more easily. But, they largely are read once and not stored.
How to Celebrate Card Reading Day
- Take a trip down memory lane. Pull out the old greeting cards you saved and read them again.
- If you don’t save them, that’s okay. Go to the store and browse through the racks of greeting cards. While you’re at it, pick out a few to send to others.
- Encourage others to participate in this day by sending greeting cards to others. However, if you want them to participate in this day on this day, you must either hand deliver them, or mail them a few days before Card Reading Day.
- Make up a hand-made greeting card. It makes the card extra special.
