World Youth Day
When: The next World Youth Day will be held on August 15-21, 2011 in Madrid, Spain On years when it is not an internaitonal event, the Pope usually holds a smaller vesion of this event in Rome, Italy. He will do so on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010.
World Youth Day was established by Pope John Paul II on Palm Sunday, 1984. He invited the Youth of Rome to celebrate the Holy Year of Redemption with him at Saint Peter's Square. It was a great success. Building upon this success and it's popularity, the pope has held this worldwide event every other year.
International World Youth Day is held in Rome two out of three years. On the third year, it is held somewhere internationally. Youth and young adults from around the world gather to celebrate and practice their faith, as well as to learn more about their faith, and to and enrich it through this spiritual pilgrimage to see the pope. Youth groups spend significant time preparing and planning for this memorable and holy pilgrimage.
