National Lollipop Day

Lollipops on Lollipop Day

About National Lollipop Day

When is National Lollipop Day? This holiday is always celebrated on July 20

People of all ages love lollipops, or suckers as they are commonly called. National Lollipop Day is today. This July 20 holiday is a day to enjoy candy on a stick as we celebrate and enjoy the creation of Lollipops. Could you imagine how sheltered our childhood, and perhaps adulthood, would be if the suckers had never been invented!? It sure would be a duller, and less tasteful world.

Select your favorite sucker flavor and then lick and suck on it all day. Speaking of flavors, the traditional cherry, orange, lemon, and lime are now joined with dozens of new and sometimes unique flavors. Different candy manufacturers rate the popularity of the flavors differently. So, it’s hard to identify which flavor is the most popular. Cherry is my personal favorite. So, I’ll go out on a limb and say cherry is the most popular lollipop flavor.

Play the Lollipop Game: Drill holes into a thick, flat board. Paint the bottom portion of a couple of lollipop sticks. Stick the lollipops at random, into the holes in the board. Each player gets to select a lollipop. If they pull the one with the painted stick, they win a prize!

For the Record: On July 18, 2012, See’s Candy Company in Burlingame, CA made the world’s largest lollipop. The chocolate lollipop was almost 5 feet tall and weighed over 7,000 pounds.

How to Celebrate National Lollipop Day

It’s always fun to participate in food holidays. Here are a few ways to enjoy National Lollipop Day:

  • Lick suckers all day long.
  • Buy some and set them on a plate at home. They will disappear fast.
  • Bring some to work to share with co-workers.
  • Give them out as behavioral awards in the classroom and in the workspace.
  • Hand them out to customers.
  • Whatever you do, do not set them down in the sand, or drop them anywhere.

History and Origin of National Lollipop Day

George Smith, the owner of Bradley Smith Company, invented and patented the Lollipop in 1908.  Legend has it, that George named the Lollipop after his favorite racehorse ” Lolly Pop”.

The Racine Confectioner’s Machinery Company claims to have created National Lollipop Day.

There is a little controversy as to who first created the automated Lollipop machine. The Racine Confectioner’s Machinery Company claims to be the first to create a machine to automatically make Lollipops. Their machine made 40 lollipops at a time. Sam Born of California also claims to have created the first automated lollipop machine, in 1916. It was called the “Born Sucker Machine”.

We found no congressional record, nor presidential proclamation, which is required to make this a “national” day. If you’d like this to become a true “National” day, contact your congressperson. He or she will lick their lips at the prospect of making suckers a national day.
