Amish Shoo-Fly Cake Recipe

People flock to Pennsylvania Dutch Amish country to take in the Amish culture, visit the many shops, and to have a piece of the famous Shoo Fly Cake. Use this classic recipe to bring an Amish tradition into your home.

Shoo-Fly Cake Ingredients:

Crumbs:

• 6 cups flour

• 2 cups brown sugar

• 1 cup lard

Syrup

• 2 cups molasses

• 2 cups hot water

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

• 2 teaspoons of baking soda diluted in boiling water.

How to make Shoo-Fly Cake:

1. Pre-heat oven to 375 ° F

2. In a bowl, mix together crumb ingredients.

3. Set aside 3/4 cups of crumbs for top.

4. In a second bowl, mix together syrup ingredients

5. Pour crumbs and syrup alternately into a 13 X 9 X 2 inch cake pan.

6. Sprinkle remaining crumbs on top.

7. Bake 45 to 50 minutes.
