Love Your Freckles Day

Love Your Freckles Day, Solar Lentigines

About Love Your Freckles Day

When is Love Your Freckles Day? This holiday is always observed on November 22

Today is the day those fortunate enough to have freckles happily look forward to. It’s Love Your Freckles Day. On this November 22 holiday, some of us get to show off those cute little spots. The rest of us with clear skin can only look at freckled folk with envy. Oddly, this holiday is in colder weather when they have faded from people with summer freckles or solar lentigines. Freckles are those cute little sun-kissed spots on your face, legs, or arms. The spots are shades of brown, tan, or red.

The dermatological name is “ephides”. Members of every ethnic group from anywhere in the world can have them. From a genetic standpoint, people who have the MC1R gene, or the VCI92 variant can have them. It appears most often on people who are light-skinned or have red hair.

It is important to note that they are not skin defects, and they are not harmful in any way. Although throughout much of history, people looked upon them as unsightly and unfavorable. During Medieval times, people with freckles were persecuted and accused of witchcraft. As recently as the 1920s, they were undesirable. Skincare companies made products specifically to hide them or make them fade. People with freckles hid them behind heavy layers of makeup. They also used various methods to remove them through surgery, chemical treatments, and more recently laser procedures.

My how times change. Nowadays freckles are “in”. People who have them wear them with pride. They are described as cute and youthful. Will this be just a passing fad? We think not, as people who have are beautiful people.

Did You Know? The word comes from the Scandinavian word “freken”.

Summer Freckles

Perhaps you have “summer freckles” or “sun freckles”. Sunlight can bring them out on the exposed skin of people who otherwise have clear skin. They appear most frequently on the face, back and arms. However, they may show up on the legs or any other part of your body. Formally called solar lentigines, it is temporary and goes away in the fall when you’re indoors your tan fades away.

While they are considered more fashionable than in the past, some people prefer to avoid them.  There are two ways to avoid summer freckles. The first way is to stay out of the sun. The second way is to slather on a high-SPF sunscreen.

Freckles Trivia

What do you know about Freckles? Here are some interesting factoids:

  • They are harmless.
  • Freckles are caused by genetics.
  • They are a natural sunscreen. They darken under the sun, to protect your skin.
  • If you have the MC1R gene, you are likely to have them.
  • While there is no exact count, it is estimated that 4-15% of the world’s population have freckles.
  • Not all redheads have them.
  • They are not a sign of cancer.
  • Freckles are shades of brown, tan, or red.
  • People with red hair and light skin are more likely to have red freckles.
  • They can be lightened with chemical treatment, laser treatment, and other methods.
  • People with them were once persecuted and accused of witchcraft.
  • In the Victorian era in England, carboxylic acid was used to attempt to remove. It caused burns.

How to Celebrate and Participate in Love Your Freckles Day

Here are some other ways of celebrate and enjoy Love Your Freckles Day:

  • If you have them, show them off.
  • Wear clothing that exposes them for others to see.
  • Post pictures of your freckles on social media.
  • Have a freckles party.
  • If you live in a warm, sunny climate, go out into the sunshine and let those solar lentigines shine through.

Today's Quotes

“I had so many freckles that my mother used to say that they were kisses from the angels. I’ve still got them.” – – Lara Flynn Boyle

“I really believe in less is more in terms of makeup. Additionally, I try not to wear too much foundation. I like to see my skin coming through. I like to see my freckles. And I just think that’s the most youthful look.”- – Michelle Monaghan.

“I love the texture of my skin and I love my freckles and even if my nose gets a little red, I don’t mind so much.”- Camille Rowe

History and Origin of Love Your Freckles Day

We did not find any information about the origin of this special day, when it began, or who originated it. The oldest article we found about this holiday was in 2020. We found countless older articles on the topic of freckles, solar lentigines, and famous people who had them. But, none of the older articles referenced this holiday.

For some strange reason, the creator of this November 22 picked a day in cold weather, when our freckles are covered up on long shirts, sweaters, and pants. It would seem to us that a summer day is more appropriate so our fine-freckled friends could display them with pride. And, people who get temprary summer freckles could get in on the fun, too.

Plan Your Epitaph Day

Tombstone with Epitaph

About Plan Your Epitaph Day

When is Plan Your Epitaph Day? This holiday is always celebrated on November 2

Plan Your Epitaph Day is a little bit morbid for my liking. My first thought was who would create this November 2 holiday? And, why? I don’t want to think about it, let alone plan it.

However………….

When you stop to think about it, maybe it’s best if you do it. You never know what a relative or friend may put on your tombstone once you’re gone. Or, worse still, what if they don’t say anything?

While we’re young, we think this is a long way away. As we age and get wiser, more of us consider getting directly involved with our epitaph, as well as all of the details of our demise. So, think about the inscription you want on your tombstone. Then, let the people who will manage your final arrangements know.

So, if you need a little nudge to plan your epitaph, let today be the day.

How to Celebrate Plan Your Epitaph Day

Here are a few ideas on how to celebrate this holiday:

  • Ponder the inscription you want on your tombstone.
  • Pre-arrange your tombstone and the cemetery.
  • Or, put it off until another time as it’s too morbid to think about.

Today's Quote

“The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins?” – – Edgar Allan Poe

History and Origin of Plan Your Epitaph Day

Lance Hardie is the creator of Plan Your Epitaph Day. He is the author of How to Write Your Own Epitaph — and Live Long Enough to Enjoy It.

It was established on November 2 coinciding with the Day of the Dead.

Believe it or not, there is an occasional reference to this being a “National” day. It’s hard to believe that the U.S. Congress or the president would waste time considering a proclamation on this topic. We did not find any congressional records or presidential proclamations for this day.

Definition of “National” Days – and why it is important to distinguish true National days.

About You're Welcome Day

When is You're Welcome Day? This holiday is the day after Thanksgiving

You’re Welcome Day encourages us to simply say “You’re welcome”. The objective of this special day is to put manners back into society. While we should say thank you every day, there is some confusion as to when is You’re Welcome Day. Read on…

This very special day comes the day after Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Day, we say “Thanks” for what we have.  So, it only seems natural, that “You’re Welcome” immediately follows a thank you.

Are you enjoying this special day? If so, you’re welcome!

Determining the Proper Date for You're Welcome Day

A couple of years after this holiday was created, we began to see a variety of dates posted for this holiday. In a follow-up study, we surfed through countless sites. We found that this day is referenced as occurring on either November 23, 24, 25, 28, or 29.  We also discovered that most sites that also noted the year, had it occurring the day after Thanksgiving. Recognizing that the single reference to the meaning and content of this day had it noted on the day after Thanksgiving, one can only conclude that this is the correct day of celebration.

In our experience, this is a classic case of individuals and websites copying a date for a special day, without understanding that it may not occur on the same date every year. Keeping the dates correct takes a lot of effort and research.

How to Celebrate You're Welcome Day

Participating in this day can happen anywhere that you are, and anywhere that you go today.

  • Just speak a profusion of “thank you’s” for even the slightest of reasons.
  • When you say thank you, make sure to be sincere. It will go a long way.

Thought for Today

The average American, over the course of his life, spends 6 months waiting at red lights.

History and Origin of You're Welcome Day

It is very likely that this special day originated on a blog in 2002. The blog was posted on blogs.salon.com, declaring that day, the day after Thanksgiving, as You’re Welcome Day. Unfortunately, the creator did not identify themselves.

It’s amazing how something as simple as a blog post can result in the creation of a new holiday.

When is World Vegan Day? This holiday is always observed on November 1

On World Vegan Day we celebrate those who practice veganism. This November 1 holiday is a great opportunity to learn and appreciate the benefits of veganism for humans, non-human animals, and the environment.

Veganism is the practice of consuming a plant-based diet and not eating animals. For a true vegan, this includes not eating fish, as well as milk, eggs, cheese, and anything made with these products. Imagine all the foods that have milk or eggs in them! A significant number of people who are “Vegan”, will not eat meat but will consume milk or eggs.

Today we celebrate the benefits of veganism to:

  • Humans – It’s a healthier, plant-based diet, and results in a healthier you. This diet is higher in fiber and lowers in cholesterol. It helps to lower the risk of heart disease, lowers blood pressure, and obesity risk.
  • Animals – Animals and animal rights groups will just love you. It means the lives of many animals will be spared.
  •  Environment – Plants are lower on the food chain and require far fewer resources to feed you than animal meats.

Vegan organizations celebrate this day, by raising awareness of veganism. They offer educational programs and workshops to the general public. They also sometimes hold a feast, loaded with plant-based goodies. If you are new to the world of veganism, you can become a vegan, if only for a day.

World Pneumonia Day

World Health Organization

When is World Pneumonia Day? This special day is always observed on November 12

Today is World Pneumonia Day, a November 12 observance. This special day is not a holiday. Rather, as mentioned, it is an observance. Created by The World Health Organization (WHO) of the UN, the goals of this day are to raise awareness, promote prevention, and promote treatment of pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a common and very serious ailment. It can be deadly. Pneumonia is an infection in your lungs, that makes breathing difficult. This in turn puts stress on your heart and other organs of your body. Just about anyone can get pneumonia. A cold can turn into pneumonia. Pneumonia is most serious for the very young, the very old, and people whose immune system is weak or compromised. Anyone with a cold can find it turns into pneumonia. If you contract pneumonia or suspect you do, see your doctor immediately. Medicine is effective in most cases. So, take medicines as prescribed. Get plenty of liquids, plenty of rest, and very importantly, get up out of bed to take short, frequent walks. Lying in bed allows pneumonia to “settle” into your lungs. That’s when pneumonia can become deadly.

Did You Know? Pneumonia is the largest single cause of death for children under 5 years old.

There’s good news in the fight against pneumonia. There is now a vaccine to help protect you from pneumonia. And, most people can take it. Now, you can protect your children, elderly parents, and yourselves. Do what the UN’s WHO want you to do. Talk to your doctor about getting the vaccine for every member of your family.

How to Celebrate World Pneumonia Day

  • Don’t wait. Get your pneumonia vaccine today!
  • Vaccinate your kids.
  • Help to get the elderly to a pneumonia vaccination site.
  • Donate to organizations working towards vaccinating people in impoverished countries.

Today's Quote

History and Origin of World Pneumonia Day

UN WHO created this special day in 2009.  Without a doubt, this effort is saving thousands upon thousands of lives. This day is raising awareness. It’s educational, as well as a call to action to get your whole family vaccinated now.

World Origami Day

Origami Day

When is World Origami Day? This holiday is always observed on November 11

Today is World Origami Day. Aren’t you glad that this November 11 holiday is finally here!? Origami is a form of art, first practiced in ancient Japan. It is the art of making intricate objects out of squares of paper. The most frequent origami objects are cranes and other birds. You can make any other object, assuming you have the skill and imagination to do so. Origami is extremely popular at weddings, parties of all kinds, and even fancy dinners.

The art of origami first appeared in Ancient Japan. It also has early roots in China and to some extent European countries. Today, you can find origami artists plying their trade to tourists on the streets of cities like Tokyo and Shanghai. In America, it is far less popular. However, if you are interested in trying your hand at origami, you can buy kits at craft stores.

Ready to try your hand at origami? Start with a simple object first. Take a piece of paper. Fold it in almost any number of ways. But, you can’t use scissors, a knife, glue, or tape parts of it together. It can only be made by folding the paper. Simple objects can be made in less than a minute, while other more intricate objects can take quite some time. There are plenty of online sites where you can get instructions.

Did You Know? Making paper airplanes is a form of origami.

How to Celebrate World Origami Day

It’s a cinch:

  • Learn Origami.

  • Teach someone how to do origami.

  • Make origami objects. Give them away to family, friends, or even strangers on the street.

  • Buy origami from someone.

Today's Quote

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” – – Steve Jobs

History and Origin of World Origami Day

We know that the art of Origami first appeared in ancient Japan. During our research on this special day, we did not discover the creator, or when it was first celebrated. Like other special holidays, we suspect it was created by someone interested in this art form, and most likely an artist.

We do know why this date was selected. Origami Cranes were made as a symbol of peace to mark the end of World War I on November 11, 1918.
