Eggs and Egg Safety

We want you to enjoy Easter and be safe. Bright, colorful Easter Eggs for decorating or eating are a big part of the fun. are a big part of the holiday.

Egg Traditions:

Poland: There is a Polish tradition to crack Easter eggs for good luck. Take a hard boiled and decorated egg. Challenge someone to crack them. Have the person hold the egg with one end up. You the, take your egg and crack it on their egg. The one who's egg does not crack is the winner and will get good luck, while the loser must eat the broken egg. The winner can then take on all challengers. The most pointed end of the egg is usually the best end to use.

Egg Facts:

  • There are 15,000 to 17,0000 pores on an egg's surface.
  • Egg yolk contains a natural source of Vitamin D. Few other foods do.
  • Fresh, uncooked eggs store up to a month or more in a refrigerator.

Did you know? You can tell if an egg is fresh or cooked by spinning it on its side. A hard boiled egg will spin smoothly, while a raw egg will wobble.

Egg Safety:

Eggs will last a long time in your refrigerator. But, they will only last a short time, if your decorated eggs are placed out on display. If you are going to eat your Easter eggs, you need to follow safety precautions as eggs can carry the deadly food poisons, including Salmonella

  • Boil eggs well. Place eggs in cold water. Let the water come to a boil, then lower it to a slow boil for ten minutes.
  • After cooking, put the eggs in the refrigerator until  ready to use.Boiling eggs removes the protective coating applied by producers, making them more susceptible to bacteria.
  • When decorating, take a few out of the refrigerator at a time.
  • Decorate and put them back into the refrigerator as soon as possible.
  • If you are using the decorated eggs for display for any length of time, use our simple, safe rule..... don't eat them.
